Mass communication for collaboration: we need a way of talking to one another that can reach everybody and isn't controlled by anyone but doesn't waste anyone's time, either.

Solution: moderation of the reach of messages in overlapping networks by random samples of people in the networks. With this sort of democratic filtering, announcements, discussion, and even planning can be shared among huge numbers of people previously excluded by logistics even if not by design.
What resource, person, organization or company would you like to see participating in NewsTools2008 in order to spur the transformation of journalism?
I would like to see participation by mass membership organizations like unions, the AARP, environmental groups, the ACLU and everyone trying to get a message out to a large number of people. They form a potential core constituency for journalism in the public interest.
How do you define "journalism that matters," and please suggest ways for journalists and technologists to collaborate (structure, events, groups, processes) in ways mostly likely to sustain it.
Journalism that matters has two meanings to me. First, news is what matters in the sense that hard news is what's important. Second, the definition of hard news is 'what matters'-- the impact events, ideas, and plans have on people's lives.

Hope to talk to you tonight,

Hi Benjamin,

I'm working on a digital textbook on news literacy and you appear to be a member of the digitocracy.

Answers to any of these five questions would be appreciated:

1. What's the best format for a book that can accommodate text, audio and video clips, can be highlighted by a student and annotated, as well as protected from unauthorized copying? (It would have to be a format students could use without paying an additional fee.)
2. Would it be better to put such a book on a DVD or provide it online or as a download?
3. What's the best low cost PC software for capturing and editing digital video?
4. Are there any free lance digital book designers you could recommend?
5. Are there any digital book producers (DVD producers) you could recommend?

Thanks,

John
